Building the future of global payments
By Ott Kaukver
Today, I am excited to announce that I have joined Checkout.com as Chief Technology Officer.
When I began talking with Checkout.com’s CEO and Founder Guillaume Pousaz about the vision that the business has to take the complexity out of global payments allowing global enterprises to grow and innovate, the challenge resonated with me.
Almost every company in the world needs payments. With the accelerating trend of global eCommerce, digital payments that operate reliably at global scale are becoming a core need, a lifeline for every business. But somehow the global payments industry is still highly fragmented, with the technology solutions that have been built decades ago. In order to run a global business, companies need to integrate and maintain a myriad of regional integrations, each one of them different from each other.
I believe the growth of eCommerce and together with that, the globalization of payments is accelerating. We are at the beginning of the journey and the opportunity is huge ahead of us. For Checkout.com, the calling is to take these complexities out of global payments, by building a powerful unified payments platform and supporting our customers in their growth.
Fundamentally, I believe businesses should have the autonomy to decide where and how to offer their products on a global level. In payments, often the fragmented and outdated infrastructure is blocking businesses from being in the markets they wanted to be in and to be in control of their business.
To give businesses control, flexibility and also global coverage, we need to align how we as a company operate and embrace autonomy in our execution.
In my past roles, we built a technology culture that allows builders — product and technology leads — to have full ownership and responsibility for their software. These builders serve as the functional CEOs of their own teams. This preserves the agility needed to scale rapidly and continuously ship solutions, but maintains focus and creates clear accountability.
Checkout.com already has a global customer base and in order to serve them well, we will be where they are. We are growing our product, technology and business development offices globally, that are focused to serve the needs of our customers. To enable that regional focused execution, we rely on modern cloud based microservices architecture, coupled with an operating model that empowers innovation and independent execution. This results in clear product ownership, focuses on operational excellence, enables fast and autonomous development, and as a result — flexible solution for our customers.
Creating the leading global unified payments platform isn’t simple and we are still at the beginning of that journey. Our team is growing in 2021 as we hire over 700 people. And we’re just getting started. It might just be the right time to join our team and make a dent in the universe.
